Mountain was inspired by a hike that I took while working in Estes Park, CO during the summer of 2009. A small group of staff and I were planning to summit a decent sized peak that day and a rather un-fit member of our staff was on the fence about coming with us.
While there would surely be a level of concern for him if he decided to try the hike, I and the other staff were also filled with a deep respect for his even wanting to try it in the first place. After a little time on the fence about it, he decided to give it a go with us.
The following 9 hours would prove to be some of the most memorable of my life as I watched this individual through blood, sweat & tears conquer the mountain.
The song has three parts which form one climatic build. Firstly, the indecision, the mental back and forth of deciding to go or not that this individual was grappling with. Secondly, the climb, the weaving winding trail that at times felt like it would never end and finally birthed into the climatic moment of the summit. Lastly, the decent, which hikers know is as long as the ascent and a time of reflection where you realize what was just accomplished and can feel every last footstep under the weight of your body and gear.
